Ho Ho Whoa!

The weekend began with a whirlwind of chores connected with the arrival of birthday and Christmas guests. Hunter arrived early for Don’s birthday, which is Dec 22, and Jillian, Kevin & Greg arriving Dec 23 for a Christmas at the coast. I made all 7 beds, cleaned the bathrooms, and mopped the floors. Hunter and Don settle in for a Saturday afternoon NFL game.

Grocery shopping is the last big chore and picking up prescriptions. In the pouring rain, I slowly make my way to Safeway as torrential rain is blinding. I arrive half an hour late to get prescriptions. I dilly dallied at home just long enough for the pharmacy to close up shop. That messes up my entire plan.

Can’t pick up pizza for two more hours so I take my time shopping, checking out and loading up groceries in the car. I strolled through Fred Meyer, that seemed eerily calm for a mere 4 days before Christmas. Rather enjoyable, I must say. I don’t get free time to do such things of this nature very often anymore. I eventually pick up pizza and mac & cheese at our new local Dominoes and head home.

I wrestle an entire carload of groceries into the house and deliver the pizza to the occupants on the top floor. By this time, Don has returned to his bedroom and TV. He heard me conversing with Hunter, so he rises from his recliner and makes his way to the kitchen, where I am unwrapping the food. He approaches me with arms wide open, like families often do when arriving or departing. Although Don has never been a bear hugger or back slapper, he gives me a big courtesy hug with an even bigger smile. He backed up a step or 2 and looks me over.

Don: Where’s the old man?

Kristy: What old man? You mean my husband?

Don: Yeah.

Kristy: I’m looking at him.

Hunter: You are the old man, ding Don.

Don: If it freezes, it doesn’t matter.

Hunter and I share glances about what the heck freezes and doesn’t matter means in Don speak? Befuddled and clueless, we all grab some food and carry on.

Note to Self: It takes more energy to unravel puzzling outbursts from Don’s mouth than I will invest at this moment.
