Bruce stopped in to visit and pick up empty cans. What a great way to recycle guest leftovers. After usual topics of discussion, like sports, family, friends, fishing, and food, Don interrupts and looks at me.
Don: When you die, where do I find my food?
Bruce and I both look at Don with the same obvious question in mind. What did you say? We stutter step around the issue, thinking it’s a perfect time to talk with Don about what he should do if something happens to me and I’m immobile. He was only interested in finding sustenance for himself. Cats are on their own, and I guess my dead body is of no concern.
Don was an Eagle Scout and took part as a camp counselor and lifeguard during summers for younger kids. The Boy Scouts of America’s motto is “Be Prepared”. The motto is a way of life that means being ready in mind and body to do your duty.
I guess he’s getting ready in mind and body for my demise.
Note to Self: You can be as prepared as you want, old man, but you still need that exit code to get out of your living quarters.
