Father’s Day 2024

Hunter comes to visit for the weekend and we plan a Father’s Day dinner for Saturday night so Hunter can go home early today for Father’s Day with his own children. After sleeping an excessive amount of hours on Friday night and Saturday well into the afternoon, we were skeptical Don would be awake to enjoy the fruits of our labor. He rallied, and we finally got a late start. We all sat down together at a dining room table and enjoyed a late evening tribute to fathers. To our surprise, Don stayed awake until almost midnight.

This morning, we wake up to another big mess in Don’s room that was enough to kill any appetite for brunch or mimosas. Cleanup takes over an hour, requires unexpected trips to the garbage can and the smell of fresh coffee brewing to get back on track.

Don receives fresh coffee and the first cut of German chocolate cake while he preps himself in front of the TV for a day of golf at the U S Open. Hunter leaves the room to shower, and I leave to grab my own breakfast. I estimate that I have approximately 15 minutes before someone starts making new demands. When I return to Don’s location in the living room, I discover what looks like a Mt. Saint Helens eruption of cake, pecan frosting, coffee, and whip cream. Repetitive sneezing launched his Father’s Day treat all over everything within 2 feet, including all those fresh clothes. Cats have fled from their morning sleeping quarters. Don looks confused about what just happened. I head to the refrigerator to pour liquor for myself.

Cleanup #2 takes a few minutes, which was just enough time to allow Hunter to get ready for his drive home. We say our goodbyes and off he goes.

Don: You will never guess who stopped by to say hello?

Kristy: Hunter?

Don: How did you know?

Kristy: Lucky guess.

Yesterday, when Don woke from that long slumber, he asked me where the landscape guy was that I think he identified as Marico. I pointed at Hunter, who was sitting on the couch, and announced that is the only person here except me. He took one wild look and Hunter and claimed, “Yeah, that’s the guy.”

Note to Self: The bottom just fell out of the plateau Don has been riding for several months regarding his cognitive skills and memory.
