For the 3rd year in a row, the NASCAR Xfinity series is racing stock cars today at Portland International Raceway in Portland, OR. Don and I were there in the pouring rain 3 years ago to watch the race. We ran into 2 of Don’s fraternity brothers from Oregon State, and that was the fun part. Walking all the way back to the Expo Center from the track where we had parked our car was not so fun. Layered in warm clothes and rain gear created the dreaded foggy eyeglass effect that was very frustrating. We needed wipers on our glasses.
Don looks very comfortable in his bed this morning. Not much stir of an effort to get up. I inquire about food. Not wanting to leave the comfort of his bed, he requests edible items to be delivered to his bedside. I then inquire about his TV options.
Kristy: It’s Saturday. Do you want NASCAR or golf this morning?
With cookie crumbs dropping from his face, he chooses golf.
Kristy: Xfinity is racing in Portland today, if that makes a difference.
All movement stops while he contemplates what I just said. Then blanket, sheets, and Don are a blur as he starts the usual overkill of motion needed for him to rise from a seated, or half-seated, position.
Don: I’ll get dressed.
Now, I’ve read that when dealing with those who suffer from dementia, it is recommended to avoid using the word no. This is definitely one of those situations where I wish I didn’t have to say no.
Kristy: Oh, so you are good to walk the 2 miles from the track back to the parking area at the Expo Center?
Don: Oh, that’s right. I forgot about that part. Probably not a good idea.
Kristy: Golf or racing on TV?
Don: Can you get me some more trail mix?
Note to Self: After driving 2 hours and paying $200 for entry to the track, Don would last 5 minutes in that 64 degree outdoor temp in Portland.
