Decision Time

Kristy: How are we doing this afternoon? Ready for a ham sandwich?

Don: I haven’t made a decision yet.

Kristy: About how you are doing or a ham sandwich?

Don: Whether I should go back tonight or stay here.

He sticks a thumb out like he’s hitchhiking north.

Kristy: Go back where? Somewhere north?

He says no more and exaggerates the pointing and thumb towards the north.

Kristy: I think you have reached your final destination.

Don: This is it?

With raised eyebrows, he fidgets in his recliner chair, wearing clothes he has on backwards.

Kristy: I’m so sorry to inform you this is it, pal.

With all the cold, rainy weather, I can’t imagine him straying too far from the comforts of blankets and hoodies in the hottest room in the house. He has all the comforts mere feet away.

Where else is he gonna find beer with breakfast, cookies, cake, and ice cream always available for a treat, someone to do all the cooking, cleaning, and laundry? No worries about money, property repairs, grocery shopping, or vehicle maintenance. He makes a lot of messes, breaks dishes, dismantles the refrigerator and cleans up nothing. All available at no additional cost to live in his own home.

I remember when he was begging to go home and get out of a skilled nursing facility. Evidently, he imagined the situation to be so dire that he contacted strangers via phone and text, claiming to be in prison and in need of rescue.

Note to Self: If he only understood, we are all prisoners under the conditions of his condition.
